Infused water game and 7 day challenge
Water is something I need to drink more of. I am guilty of drinking too many sugary drinks. Infused water can help.
There are 2 main benefits to drinking more water.
- It saves money. Water is cheaper than juice and pop/soda.
- It is healthier than those sugary alternatives.
While I do enjoy a nice ice cold glass of regular water, I need something with some taste and variety at times to really make this a lifestyle change. This is where fruit infused water comes in.
I came up with the game and challenge idea to try different combinations of fruit and herbs that I may not otherwise try, to get the kids involved and excited about replacing juice with more water and to give me a little kick start to making drinking more water a lifestyle change.
Viewing it as a challenge made me more likely to commit to it and starting with just 7 days made it seem achievable.
The game part:
The game part involves picking the flavor combinations out of a hat. My daughter and I brainstormed and on slips of paper wrote down the names of fruits and a few herbs.
Involve the kids. Ask them which types of fruits they would like to try.
We came up with:
strawberries cucumber rosemary
blueberries mint lemon
oranges watermelon peach
basil lime kiwi
We put our slips of paper with the above words into a bowl. The kids took turns each pulling out 2 slips of paper. If 2 herbs were drawn, we kept the first one pulled out and redrew. You could try 2 herbs together, I just didn’t want to :).
Once we had our combination we put it back into the bowl so it could be used again in a different combination.
If you happen to draw the same combination twice, redraw. We recorded the combinations for each of the next 7 days.
We picked all the 7 combinations at once, that way I could have the fruits/herbs on hand for the day we needed them.
Our combinations were:
Monday – Watermelon Basil
Tuesday – Mango Blueberry
Wednesday – Mint Orange
Thursday – Kiwi Mango
Friday – Strawberry Cantaloupe
Saturday – Rosemary Lime
Sunday – Orange Strawberry
We put 12 cups of water into a large dispenser.
If you are interested in purchasing one similar to what we used you can check out this one (affiliate link).
I peeled the fruit, I just didn’t want any residual pesticides soaking in our drinking water.
We let the fruit/herbs infuse for a couple hours before trying.
The challenge part:
The challenge part was simply drinking the 12 cups of infused water each day. With 3 of us home that week, it wasn’t difficult at all.
Watermelon Basil – I used 3 large and 3 small basil leaves with 3/4 cup of watermelon.
This was delicious. I was a little worried about trying this one, wasn’t sure what the basil would be like but I really enjoyed this one. My daughter loved this one too.
Mango Blueberry – I used a heaping 3/4 cup of each.
I thought this was quite good. The kids didn’t like this one though.
Mint Orange – I used 2 mandarin oranges with a few sprigs of mint. Puncture the orange slices.
This was good and refreshing, but didn’t have much taste. The kids weren’t a fan of this one either.
Kiwi Mango – 1 large kiwi and 1/2 a mango.
Awful and sour. None of us liked this one.
Strawberry Cantaloupe – 1 cup of each.
Very good. The cantaloupe over powered the strawberries. I would try this one again but add more strawberries. I was surprised to like this one, this is another that I thought I wouldn’t like but did. The kids really like this one.
Rosemary Lime – 1 1/2 lime and 1 large and 1 small rosemary sprig.
Nasty!!! This one was just plain awful. The kids thought the same, although my mom was over to visit that day and tried some. She liked it!?!
Orange Strawberry – This time I used a naval orange. I used approx. 3/4 cup of each.
This was good. The kids thought this one was just okay.
- Mine – Watermelon Basil
- My son’s – Watermelon Basil
- My daughter’s – Strawberry Cantaloupe
- Unanimously – Rosemary Lime
For me, having a variety of flavors really does make me want to drink more water and probably more importantly drink less sugary drinks. Fruit infused water provides that variety.
Give it a try!
Consider incorporating this game/challenge with the 30 day steps and water challenge.
Which flavor combinations did you like best? The least?
